Frittenbude – a Workshop about Food and Gender
An exemplary examination of the field of tension between food and gender.
How do gender roles materialize on a candy bar or on hygiene products? How masculine or feminine is a sports drink? This workshop revolved around making explicit gendered and reductionist coding, images, and representations in the food segment. Methods such as mapping, decoding, genre transfer, and parameter hacking were used for analysis and creative intervention. Implemented with a practical approach, "Die Frittenbude" was created and the previously recorded gender codes were translated into a real product range. Tasks of the workshop were finally the development and preparation of five different types of French fries, based on previously researched products and foods, as well as a menu, a manifesto against stereotyping and discrimination in design, the grease paper on which the manifesto was screen-printed and an overall audience event.
